How do you stack the cake when making layer cake? Bottom side up and the second layer bottom side up also?

The bottom layer can be placed in any direction (after it’s leveled); then, after the top (second) layer is leveled, place it cut side down, so that the top of the cake, the surface that will be iced, is the smooth side.
