I baked two 8" round cakes side by side in the oven. The sides of the cakes baked away from the sides of the pans. What could cause this?

Paige - from Independence, KS

As a cake bakes, it natually shrinks a little and pulls away from the sides of the pan; this actually makes removing the cake from the pan easier. The only issue I can think of is maybe you're cake was a little dry and it over baked. But baking the cakes side by side in the oven should not have effect on how much they pull away from the sides of the pan.
