I have made previous tiered cakes before but for some reason the top cakes are smashing the bottom cake. What can I do to prevent the top cakes from smashing the bottom one?

Liz - from Joliet, IL

Whenever you are making a tiered cake it is necessary to use dowel rods for support. The dowel rods bear the weight from the tiers above. Without it, bottom layers will get smashed or crumble during construction and transportation.
