You should bake the cake as soon as you have made the batter. The baking soda in the mix, used as leavening, starts to work as soon as it is mixed with liquid, so if you keep it out without baking, your cake won’t rise as high as it should. That said, if you are baking cupcakes (you can make 24 cupcakes from a standard cake mix) the mix should be okay while you bake the first 12 cupcakes.
