After removing my pound cake from the oven, as it cools in the pan it cracks on top. Why does this happen? I do not cover it while cooling.

Don't stress - lots of pound cake recipes split down the middle. The cracks are caused by steam releasing from the hot cake. When the steam has no where to go, it forces it's way out and that's why the cake cracks.
