Is there any way to make a cake made from a box mix more dense? I find that my cakes crumble and get rounded edges and it doesn’t make for a nice, crisp shape when decorating.

A box of cake mix often has a second set of instructions for baking the cake as a pound cake, which will taste the same but be more dense. Then, make sure your cake layers are completely cooled before cutting or working with them (that includes covering them with plastic wrap!). To square a cake for decorating, follow the Leveling the Cake section on our website. You can either use a serrated knife or a cake leveler to level your cake.
