I have friend that is wanting to dye a cake black for an 'over the hill' birthday. What is the best way to do that?

It's easiest to start with chocolate cake and chocolate icing, because then you are starting with a dark color base. They add Black icing color until you reach the shade you desire. If you would like to use less icing color, consider making only accents on the cake black instead of the entire thing.
