How far in advance can you ice a cake with buttercream and fondant?

You can frost the cake with buttercream 3-5 days in advance. The same is true of a fondant cake, but keep in mind that you cannot refrigerate a fondant cake as the fondant will become soft. This also means that a fondant cake cannot have any kind of filling that requires refrigeration.
