Is it possible to use cardboard cake boards to make tiered cakes? Or, must I use only the plastic stacking plates with the feet?

Plastic separator plates offer the most stability in a stacked tiered cake. If, however, you are just making a tiered cake with the top layers stacked on directly on top of each other, with no space or columns in between, you could use cake circles or cake boards; you still need to use wooden or plastic dowel rods to support the top layers.
